Math is Magic

It is only fitting that at least one pillar of my website should be dedicated to this most amazing, most wonderful and blessed discipline.

While the magic of math is indeed inexhaustible, I currently have not yet written a whole lot of math-related content for my site. And so (at least for now) this page will consist mostly of a curated list of off-site links to some of the more interesting, more “recreational” math-related stuff that I have come across over the years.

This is the sort of stuff which, like art and music, can be appreciated by just about anyone.

Mathematical Christmas Angel - This image of an angel was constructed by some artist using mathematical formulas.

Discovering Math - A nice quote, and a pattern.

Magic Number 9 - Somebody wrote some stuff about the number 9.

PIE PI 3.14 - reflectional ambigram in which 3.14 equals PIE

Mandelbrot’s Bat - I came across this image on deviantART a while back, of a Mandelbrot‑like fractal which looks kind of like a bat or even the Batman logo. After some experimenting, I managed to re-produce the image myself. I discovered that this is the polar inversion of the graph Z(n+1) = cos(Zn) + C

Do you like Batman? Do you like math? My math teacher is REALLY cool. - Speaking of the Batman logo, somebody’s math teacher discovered the “Batman Equation” lol

Julia Mandelbrot - Every point in the Mandelbrot has a corresponding Julia set, and so every Julia set is related to the Mandelbrot set, as can be seen in this image that I made a while ago. What surprised me, however, is that it actually looks like the Mandelbrot set when zoomed out. It’s like the microcosm and the macrocosm or something.

The Fox Function - It seems that somebody discovered a fox function! This is beyond my understanding at the moment, but still pretty cool.

Koch Snowflake - I programmed a Turtle to draw the Koch snowflake (pronounced “Coke”).

On the Number 37 - DGaston discovered these truths about the number 37 while playing with his calculator as a kid.

On the Number 73 - In response, I have written up my own article on the number 73, which shares some of these same properties.

More to come!

Magic Tricks

Since this is “mathemagic”, I also wanted to be sure to include some mathematical magic tricks.

Disappearing Number - Tricky question. It really does seem like the dollar has gone missing!

MATHS MAGIC! - A trick involving your age and the last digit of your cell phone number.

MAGICAL MATH TRICK - An unwinnable game?

A mathemagical trick - A fun trick.

Here is a trick that I came up with on my own.

Not really math, but here’s a cool magic trick that I came across as a kid.
